TWO LEGAL RESEARCH POSITIONS NOW AVAILABLE

Two part-time legal research positions are now available to work in the chambers of Dominique Hogan-Doran SC of 5 Wentworth Chambers, Sydney during 2019.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

Legal research assistants are great multitaskers capable of handling demands from several cases at the same time. Set out below are the key responsibilities and skills of this position. Many of my past researchers have gone on to work as Judges Associates, or studied overseas, before commencing legal practice.

The positions are open to final year undergraduate law students or recent graduates. A good academic standard is expected in applicants. Applicants with the following backgrounds will be favourably considered:

  • Mooting experience

  • Completed Corporations Law

  • Completed Equity/Trusts Law

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep up to date with legal news

  • Read legal opinions by judges to make sure you are up to speed with changes in legislation or case law

  • As a paralegal, use these opinions and research to provide relevant and timely information

  • Prepare research schedules so work runs smoothly and deadlines are clear

  • Use the internet and/or libraries to source material 

  • Analyse material to ascertain its trustworthiness

  • Write reports, notes and maintain databases on all the research carried out

  • Foster productive relationships with contacts for future use

SKILLS

  • Exhibiting exceptional time management skills in order to meet deadlines

  • Respecting confidentiality of personal and client information

  • The ability to take large amounts of information and sift it for what is important

  • Excellent writing skills

  • A robust, methodical and energetic approach

  • An excellent attention span and high levels of concentration 

  • An aptitude for and/or interest in the law

  • An eye for detail and for making connections

  • Strong IT skills, including databases

  • Clear communication skills

  • A strong command of English and editing ability

  • The ability to foster and promote productive professional relationships with people around the globe

HOURS

Hours are negotiable depending on your availability and interest. Minimum 10 hours per week. You can work remotely on research tasks and/or work from my chambers ante-room, as best suits.

RATES

$40 per hour, paid weekly. You will need to have an ABN, and will be retained as an independent contractor.
